Bypoll results 2026 seat-wise: Nandigram margin of 1,22,753 as BJP takes 3 of 6 seats
Published

We built the full six-seat list from three outlets: winners, margins and runners-up in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, plus the three figures the outlets disagree on.
Original report
In the bypoll results declared on 9 October 2026, the BJP's Hasi Rani Rath won Nandigram in West Bengal by a margin of 1,22,753 votes, India TV and The News Mill reported (India TV, 2026; The News Mill, 2026). That is the largest Nandigram bypoll result margin among the five Assembly seats in this round.
Six seats in four states and union territories voted. The BJP won three, the TVK two and the AINRC one, according to our tally of the three outlets' results (Dainik Jagran, 2026; India TV, 2026; The News Mill, 2026).
No single report we found lists all six seats with winner, margin and runner-up, so we built that list from three. Where the outlets disagree, we say so.
Bypoll results 2026 seat-wise: all six seats
- Nandigram (West Bengal): Hasi Rani Rath, BJP, won by 1,22,753; runner-up Milan Pradhan, Congress (India TV, 2026; The News Mill, 2026).
- Rejinagar (West Bengal): Shankharav Sarkar, BJP, polled 1,29,914 and won by 75,816 over Golam Nabi Azad of the AJUP, who polled 54,098 (India TV, 2026; The News Mill, 2026).
- Nagaon Lok Sabha (Assam): Devasish Sharma, BJP, won; Badruddin Ajmal of the AIUDF was runner-up (India TV, 2026).
- Thattanchavady (Puducherry): Ashok Anand, AINRC, won by 8,482, polling 13,358 to 4,876 for E Vinayagam of the Congress (India TV, 2026).
- Dharapuram (Tamil Nadu): P Sathyabama, TVK, won by 9,471 (Dainik Jagran, 2026).
- Madurantakam (Tamil Nadu): K Maragatham Kumaravel, TVK, won (Dainik Jagran, 2026; India TV, 2026).
The two Bengal wins were the biggest of the Assembly contests.
West Bengal: two BJP wins by big margins
Nandigram's 1,22,753 margin and Rejinagar's 75,816 are the two largest Assembly margins reported in this round (India TV, 2026).
At Rejinagar, Shankharav Sarkar's 1,29,914 votes were more than twice the runner-up's 54,098. The working: 54,098 × 2 is 1,08,196, which is below 1,29,914.
Who held Nandigram before is where the outlets part. Dainik Jagran noted that Suvendu Adhikari won the seat for the TMC in 2016; India TV described it as a seat the BJP held (Dainik Jagran, 2026; India TV, 2026).
The one Lok Sabha seat in the round has its own number problem.
Assam: two outlets give two Nagaon margins
India TV reported that Devasish Sharma polled 7,14,349 votes and won Nagaon by 1,41,775 (India TV, 2026). The News Mill put the margin at 1,57,804 (The News Mill, 2026).
India TV gave Badruddin Ajmal 5,72,125 votes and Congress's Sibamoni Bora 1,29,492 (India TV, 2026). The arithmetic on India TV's own figures supports its margin: 7,14,349 minus 5,72,125 is 1,42,224, close to but not exactly 1,41,775.
That near miss is why Nagaon's final margin should be read from the Election Commission's result page.
Tamil Nadu: the TVK takes both seats
The TVK won Dharapuram and Madurantakam. Both seats fell vacant after their legislators moved from the AIADMK to the TVK, Dainik Jagran reported (Dainik Jagran, 2026).
The Madurantakam margin is reported very differently: about 19,000 by Dainik Jagran and 74,048 by India TV (Dainik Jagran, 2026; India TV, 2026).
DMK chief M.K. Stalin called the Tamil Nadu polls a "murder of democracy", Dainik Jagran reported (Dainik Jagran, 2026).
What the leaders said
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: "People have deep-rooted connect with BJP-NDA's good governance agenda", India TV reported (India TV, 2026).
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the NDA wins in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry, along with recent municipal polls in Rajasthan and Tripura, show people rejected the INDI Alliance, The News Mill reported (The News Mill, 2026). Stalin's criticism of the Tamil Nadu polls is the counter-view on record.
How the coverage split
Dainik Jagran's headline led with the BJP winning Nandigram and the TVK sweeping Tamil Nadu. India TV's framed a BJP sweep of West Bengal and Assam. The News Mill led with Amit Shah's claim that the results rejected the INDI Alliance.

How we did this
We built the seat-by-seat list from three reports on the 9 October 2026 results: India TV's live results page, Dainik Jagran's results report and The News Mill's report on Amit Shah's remarks, read on 14 October. We took each seat's winner, party, margin and runner-up, compared the figures across outlets, and flagged every conflict instead of picking one. We checked the Rejinagar and Nagaon arithmetic ourselves. We did not have the Election Commission's final result sheets.
