E20 petrol: how to check a car is compatible, and what E100 rules change

Flow chart of four E20 checks: fuel-flap marking, owner's manual, maker statement such as VW's April 2020 cut-off, dealer

Look inside the fuel flap and read the manual. Volkswagen says all its petrol cars sold since April 2020 are E20-ready. The new E100 rules cover only vehicles built for that fuel, and no official mileage figure could be found.

Original report · Explained

Is my car E20 compatible? As of 28 October 2026, the quickest check is the marking inside the fuel-inlet flap and the fuel section of the owner's manual, confirmed with the service centre, The Week's checklist says (The Week, 2025). Most cars made from April 2023, under the BS-VI phase 2 norms, are designed for E20, the 20% ethanol petrol now sold nationwide (The Week, 2025; Tribune India, 2025).

The question is back because the road transport ministry has amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to add E100 alongside E85 (Tribune India, 2026; DNA India, 2026). Those fuels are only for vehicles designed and certified for them. Cars and bikes already on sale or on the road, E20 models included, are excluded, and owners need not switch fuel or modify anything (Tribune India, 2026). See how every outlet covered it.

Four checks show whether a car is E20-ready

Start with an E20 or E10 marking inside the fuel flap, The Week advises (The Week, 2025). Then:

Older cars are the grey zone. Volkswagen says its cars sold before April 2020 were not evaluated, and on retrofit kits it says: "No, this is not under consideration currently." (Volkswagen India, n.d.)

On mileage, the evidence is thinner.

No official mileage figure was found

The only number we found is a 1-3% fall in mileage, which The Week attributed to "multiple studies" (The Week, 2025). That is a secondary figure, not an official test result; the ARAI and petroleum ministry pages we tried did not open.

Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari called the criticism a sponsored campaign at the SIAM convention on 11 September 2025, more than a year ago, and said ARAI had found no risk to vehicles (Tribune India, 2025). We found no new comment from him this month.

What is new is the E100 rule, and it is narrow.

E100 rules change nothing for cars already on the road

Being E20-ready "does not automatically make a vehicle suitable for E85 or E100", the ministry said, as Tribune India reported (Tribune India, 2026). The higher blends are only for vehicles built and certified to run on them.

DNA India adds detail from the amended rules (DNA India, 2026):

DNA India dates the notification to 23 October; Tribune India reported the ministry's statement on 26 October (DNA India, 2026; Tribune India, 2026). Where the ethanol comes from is shifting too: our report Sugar ethanol diversion barred for 2026-27: why C-heavy molasses still flows traces which cane routes still feed the blend.

How the coverage split

The same amendment read three ways. Tribune India led on reassuring existing owners; DNA India on the Centre approving 100% ethanol vehicles and the flex-fuel push; The Week's guide was an owner's checklist. None gave an official mileage figure.

What happens next

The rules take effect on publication in the Gazette, with no date given (Tribune India, 2026). Either way, nothing changes for existing petrol cars and bikes.

Questions people are asking

Is my car E20 compatible?

Check the fuel-flap marking and the manual, then the service centre (The Week, 2025).

Do the new E100 rules force me to change fuel?

No. Existing owners need not switch fuel or modify their vehicles (Tribune India, 2026).

Does E20 petrol cut mileage?

The Week cites a 1-3% fall from studies; we found no official figure (The Week, 2025).

Will E20 petrol void my warranty?

Volkswagen India says not for its cars sold after 1 April 2020 (Volkswagen India, n.d.). For other makes, ask the service centre.

Is Gadkari's paid campaign remark new?

No. He made it at the SIAM convention on 11 September 2025 (Tribune India, 2025).

How we did this

On 28 October 2026 we read the amended rules as reported by Tribune India and DNA India, Volkswagen India's E20 compatibility page, The Week's E20 checklist and Tribune India's 2025 report on Gadkari. We set the vehicle checks, makers' cut-off dates and mileage claims side by side, and used our coverage page to compare framing. Government mileage pages and the notification text did not open, so the notification date is attributed to each outlet. The hero is our flow chart of the four checks.
